The Ministry of Education, France’s biggest employer, has paid a heavy price in budget cuts over the past few years.
Between 2007 and 2010 close to 50,000 teaching positions will have been axed, 13,500 of those in 2009 and 16,000 in 2010. These cuts come as the number of students is rising, both in lower secondary schools (collèges, up 16,000) and in primary schools (up 17,000), a rise that will have a knock on effect over the coming years on the number of students in lycées, down 27,000 this year.
