Friday, Washington withdrew Cuba from its blacklist of states “supporting terrorism”, on which still remain Syria, Sudan and Iran. That decision, expected since President Barack Obama gave his support to it in mid-April, marks a change towards reconciliation between the two countries after half a century of tension and the American embargo of Cuba since February 1962. Two weeks ago the Cuban president, Raul Castro, clearly indicated that once this “accusation” was lifted, ambassadors could be exchanged between the two capitals. Quite evidently, the White House decision caused Republican discontent. Thus, President of the House of Representatives, Republican John Boehner, seriously considered that the Obama administration “has handed the Castro regime a significant political win in return for nothing”.
