Record Cut Confirmed

Translated Tuesday 2 October 2007, by Gene Zbikowski

Yesterday the French government confirmed the axing of a record 11,200 jobs in education.

On Sept. 26, the French government confirmed the axing of a record 11,200 jobs in education. Junior and senior high schools will be hardest hit, with 12,400 net job losses. The French ministry of finance justifies slashing 1800 jobs as corresponding to the fall in the number of students, and another 2,040 as due to “too many teachers for certain subject matters.” The equivalent of 4,200 full time jobs is to be “economized” thanks to the exoneration of overtime hours from income tax. Finally, 1,000 administrative staff will not be replaced when they retire. The French ministry of finance also confirmed that it hopes to reduce the number of class hours devoted to pupils.
